Mark from Florida recently emailed me this question:
I have a waterfront house on the gulf in Florida. I need a new roof I was thinking about a metal roof but with the salt water close by would this be a mistake?
Following is my response:
Many of today’s residential metal roofs have coatings that help tremendously with corrosion resistance. This is done with zinc and aluminum coatings on the steel as well as with various paint finishes or stone coatings. However, for a truly oceanfront house, you may find some warranty limitations.
You could also consider aluminum as an option as it is rust-free and most products carry no exclusions for coastal applications.
Copper also offers a rust-free option but it is more costly than steel or aluminum.
