Energy Tax Credit

Written by Todd Miller on June 8, 2009 | Filed under: Roofing Help Podcasts

UPDATE… The 25C federal tax credit for reflective roofing is set to expire at the end of 2016. It appears unlikely that any actions will be taken by congress before the end of the year to continue it into 2017.

Right now is a great time to buy a metal roof. “Why?” you may ask. Well, the reason is because our federal government has recognized the Energy Efficiency of certain metal roofs and as a result, they are providing a tax credit for purchasers of specific types of metal roofing.

How do I get a Tax Credit for my roof?

Now what is that and how do you go about getting it? First of all, the credit is applied to metal roofs that have coatings on them that have reflective pigment in them for Energy Efficiency. So you want to go to the energy star website where they’ve got a whole list of the metal roofing products that are energy star-rated. Any of those products will be eligible for the credit.

How much can the tax credit be?

According to federal law that tax credit is available for up to 30% of the cost of the roofing materials themselves with a maximum cap of $1,500. So that means in most cases, homeowners who are choosing a metal roof with reflective pigment they are getting a $1,500 tax credit. Remember a tax credit is different than a deduction because the tax credit directly affects the bottom line of the amount of taxes that you have to pay.

Additionally, many areas of the country are starting to have utility rebates available. If you live on the west coast, check with your utility company and see if they have any sort of rebate program currently available for you if you purchase an energy-efficient metal roof.

It’s great time to be buying a metal roof, because there are people actually willing to pay you to buy an energy-efficient metal roof.
