Tips for Repairing a Leaky Roof

May 7, 2009 | Filed under: Roof Repair, Roofing Help Podcasts

Probably the number one thing that will send a homeowner to the Yellow Pages looking for a roofing contractor is because they’ve got a leaky roof going on. Now many homeowners will choose to roof their homes well in advance of actually having water infiltration going on, but let’s say you have waited too long and now your roof is leaking. What do you do? First of all, you want to go out and choose a product and a contractor that is going to be appropriate to do a good job on remedying your situation. I certainly would suggest if you do have a current leak going on, to try to track it down.

Let Your Contractor Know

Many times homeowners will have a leak and they’ll go ahead and contract out to have a new roof put on their house, but they won’t tell the contractor “Hey I’ve got a leak going on already and here’s where it is.” Your contractor really needs to know if you have an existing leak. One key reason for that is sometimes the leak may not actually be related to the roof at all. It may actually be related to a side wall, or chimney, or some other type of penetration through the roof. So, it’s important that the contractor knows.

The worst thing that you could have happen is have a roof leak; contract to have a new roof put on; and at the end you still have the same leak. No one wants that to happen! So make sure that if you I do have an existing roof leak, call it to your contractors attention, make sure you get that figured out before they start with your new roof.
