#13 – The Walkability of Metal Roofing

February 22, 2017 | Filed under: Metal Roofing 101 Series, Roofing Help Videos

Metal roofs can be walked upon. And, what’s more important, they are just as walkable when they are 30 or 50 or more years old as when they are new. That is not the case with other roofing materials. Depending upon the exact style of metal roof you choose, there may be different instructions in order to ensure your safety when walking on the roof, as well as to prevent damage to the roof. Generally speaking, though, there is little reason to ever get on a metal roof. I do suggest that, when a metal roof is installed, if there is something on the roof that needs periodic attention such as painting a dormer, why not try to make that as maintenance free as the roof? In specific regards to walking on metal shingle roofs, you want to stay on the upper half of the roof panels where there is minimal air space beneath the metal. Many metal shingles also have optional foam backers to fill up that air space which can be used on the entire roof or just in areas subject to occasional foot traffic.
